Joseph Catama - Onsight Gear Sponsored Athlete

Age: 15

Hometown: Thousand Oaks, CA

Favorite Rock Type:  Granite

Favorite Climbing Area: The Buttermilks, Echo Cliffs and Mt. Charleston

Goal: Qualify for US National Team and compete at the World Championship

About Joseph:

Joseph David Catama is an aspiring 15 year old athlete whose love for climbing started only two years ago. His first experience in competitive  sports was in track and field where in just his second season, at age 13, he qualified and competed in the 2013 USA National Junior Olympics for 100m Hurdles in North Carolina. During that spring he discovered rock climbing and by the end of that summer, a new passion was born. Just beginning high school--being part of a team was intriguing.  He joined the Boulderdash Climbing Team in Westlake Village, CA led by coach Jesse Weiner. During his first bouldering season, Joseph placed 2 nd  at the Southern California Regional Championships, and sent his first ever V9, at the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway. He claimed the Southern California Regional Championship in sport climbing and then proceeded to place 5 th at the Youth Sport Climbing Nationals in Atlanta Georgia later that summer. Joseph takes seriously the belief that training to be the best version he was created to be in all areas of life will only lead to success. He embraces opportunities to grow personally and help in the climbing community. Joseph is currently training with Isaac Palatt and the Stronghold Climbing Team in Downtown Los Angeles. He has now sent multiple V10's, a V11, a 5.13b, and 5.13c over the course of this past year. Joseph's determination and burning passion manifest in his approach to each climb. He says, “I approach each climb believing and envisioning myself on the top.”

Favorite Climbing Area: Bishop during the winter you can always catch me there

About Nathan:

I started climbing in 2009 and it has been a huge part of my life. From the time I started climbing I’ve been competing in the USA Climbing youth circuit. My first SCS season in 2010 I competed at Nationals in Atlanta. I’m currently on the Sender One Climbing Team where I train 3 days a week with my team. In addition to team practice I independently train 5 to 6 days a week.

Outside of competitive climbing I’m passionate about climbing outdoors. I enjoy climbing in local areas such as Black Mountain, Tramway, and Bishop. Currently I’ve been training for SCS Nationals and I feel confident that I could qualify for finals at Nationals. I’m soon to be a senior at Edison High School. I enjoy going to the beach to body board and film in the water with my GoPro. I enjoy traveling outside of the country and learning about other cultures and customs. My favorite places are Italy and Spain. I hope to climb there next summer in 2016.

Ben Lim - Onsight Gear Sponsored Athlete

Age: 23

Hometown: Dana Point, CA

Favorite Rock Type: Sandstone

Favorite Climbing Area: The New River Gorge

Goal: Enjoy climbing for what it is.

About Ben:

In 2013 I graduated from UCLA with a bachelors in Civil Engineering, but I also discovered rock climbing. Through 2014, I worked as a project engineer for a general contractor. In 2015, everything changed. I hit road and decided to try to be a dirtbag rock climber. So far, what I have come to realize is that climbing is ephemeral; the satisfaction gained from accomplishment is momentary. However, the process of growing, the people it brings into your life, and the places it takes you are what make climbing such a fulfilling way of life.

Everyday, Onsight Gear helps me indulge in this wonderful world of rock climbing, while minimizing my visual impact on the rock.
